Locate the tooth if possible, handling it by the crown and not the root. You may rinse the tooth with water only. Do not clean the tooth with soap and refrain from scrubbing or handling the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is intact, try to reinsert the tooth into the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a piece of gauze. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing milk or the patient’s saliva. If the patient is old enough not to swallow the tooth, it may also be carried in the patient’s mouth (beside the cheek). The patient must see a dentist IMMEDIATELY. Time is a vital factor in saving the tooth.
